Gentle Molding Therapy GMT aka Ortho-k

'What is GENTLE MOLDING THERAPY-GMT?'

GENTLE MOLDING THERAPY-GMT uses specially designed vision retainers to gently and gradually reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea) to eliminate or reduce nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia(the need for READING GLASSES). The principle is similar to the use of a dental retainer used by an orthodontist to realign crooked teeth. The vision retainers are similar to contact lenses and are only worn at night while sleeping. They are then removed upon awakening to provide clear vision without using glasses or contact lenses! The retainers are comfortable and very easy to care for.

'Why think about GMT? Why not just wear eyeglasses or contact lenses?'

The main purpose of GMT is to be free from both contact lenses and eyeglasses during waking hours. While this is ideal for sports enthusiasts or those who work in dusty or dirty environments, for others GMT offers the appeal of being free from corrective lenses during the day. GMT also offers relief from the problems sometimes associated with full time contact lens wear like drying and things getting on or under the lenses.

'Does GMT have any advantages over Laser Surgery?'

There are several. GMT is less than the cost of Laser Vision Correction Surgery. It does not involve any post-operative pain. Also, the hazy post-operative vision that can be associated with laser surgery does not occur with GMT. Both eyes can easily be done at the same time with GMT. Also, prescription changes are easy to deal with using GMT. There are no strong steroid or antibiotic drugs needed with GENTLE MOLDING THERAPY as there are during the post-operative period for laser surgery. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, GMT is REVERSIBLE, WHILE LASIK IS NOT!!!

'Is everyone suitable for GMT and can any doctor perform it?'

The answer to both questions is no. It does not work on every patient and needs to be performed in a very exact and meticulous manner. We have received special training and have the necessary diagnostic equipment, computer software and expertise to perform GMT.

The procedure works best on mild to moderate amounts of nearsightedness or astigmatism. More severe cases can have their vision improved, but will still need some vision correction. The procedure also does not work well on certain shaped corneas. Also, there are several unmeasurable factors for each patient - most notably the cornea?s rigidity. Thus the speed of GMT varies with each patient. Generally, but not always, less nearsighted patients respond faster than more nearsighted ones. There are no age barriers for GMT. It is safe for children and adults and is an excellent alternative for children who are just first becoming nearsighted as GENTLE MOLDING may prevent any further nearsightedness from occurring! Also, while success rates are very high, success cannot be guaranteed due to factors like the inability to wear the vision retainer for physiological reasons or other systemic health problems that may reduce wearing time.

'What does the GMT procedure involve?'

A comprehensive eye health examination is performed first. Then, a corneal topographer is used to obtain a very precise computerized ?map? of the cornea?s shape. This information is placed into the ORTHO-VISION computer software and a diagnostic retainer is fit in the office. If at that time it is determined that you are a good candidate for GMT, your own vision retainers will be ordered. It takes about one to two weeks for the retainers to be made and delivered.

When you pick up your retainers, you will be instructed on how to use and care for them. The maintenance is very easy and involves only one bottle of solution. If the retainers fit properly, you may wear them that first night. Your vision should see well with the retainers on.

We will see the first morning after you wear your retainers. You should come to the office wearing your vision retainers. We will remove them for you. Of course, should you experience any problems while at home with your retainers, simply remove them.

Most of the visual changes occur rapidly over the first few days. As the cornea changes shape and vision improves, we will refit and reorder successive vision retainers (if needed). During this interim period we will supply you with (no-charge) contact lenses or glasses to be worn during the day. These are usually only needed for the first few days. For most patients, only one pair of retainers is needed.

The majority of patients achieve excellent vision in only a few days - many after only one night of wear. Even after you are seeing well, we will continue to see you a while longer to ensure your cornea is adapting to the retainers. Most patients are done with their follow up care in two months although some may take more or less time. When the treatment is completed, the last retainer used will be worn on a nightly basis. Some patients are able to use the retainers every other night.

'How much does GENTLE MOLDING THERAPY cost?'

Depending on your prescription, the total fee for the entire GENTLE MOLDING program is between $2,100 and $4,100. This includes all of the professional visits, retainer lenses needed to achieve optimal vision, and any needed interim soft contact lenses or glasses. Lost, broken or spare retainers are available at a cost of $190 for each eye.

'What are the disadvantages of GMT?'

You must be prepared to allow 3 - 5 visits over a two month period. Should you stop wearing your retainers, your vision will slowly return to its original state. While the degree of success is very high, it cannot be guaranteed. However, when the corneal topography and computer software indicate a patient will be successful, it is rare that patients don't do well with GMT. Rates and amount of improvement vary from one person to the next.

'I've never heard of GMT. Is it new?'

Attempts to re-shape the cornea have been tried since contact lenses were first fit. The process used to be called orthokeratology. This process would often take over a year to complete and the results were not nearly as favorable as GMT. For this reason, many doctors and patients elected not to participate in GMT. With the newer diagnostic technology used to measure the corneal shape and the newer materials being used for vision retainers, GMT is now a viable alternative for many nearsighted, farsighted, astigmatic, and presbyopic patients.

Testimonials

For more than a decade, I have been wearing contacts (-6.00 both eyes) and eyeglasses, but but did not qualify for Lasik surgery.  As a triathlete, I have constantly faced challenges with my eyes -- from waking up early to cutting swimming workouts short due to losing a contact in the water -- struggles with my eyes have been an added, unnecessary stress. About two months ago, I began Gentle Molding Therapy with Dr. David Roth and it has changed my life.  For the first time in years, I can open my eyes under water and run without the worry that sweat will drip into my eyes. This is an amazing treatment and an opportunity for anyone with eye issues, especially athletes, to have the freedom to train and compete with clear, worry-free vision. I highly recommend this treatment to the triathlon community and the public at large.

Dear Dr. David Roth,
I would like to thank you for introducing me to Ortho-K (vision correction without surgery..GMT). It has been a miracle, as a firefighter and as a rescue specialist for South Florida’s Task Force 2, the demands on my vision are extraordinary. As a firefighter I work 24 hour shifts and for the last 8 yea...rs contacts where not cutting it. Dr Roth the true medical professional suggested I look into Ortho-K (vision correction without surgery..GMT). . Since then there are many lives that can thank him. I will never forget when he told me not to expect 20/20 especially with the rigors I put my body through. And I regret to tell you that I do not have 20/20; I have better. About 20/15 six hours after taking my lenses off. In January, Haiti experienced an earthquake that not only changed the life of many Haitians but also mine and a lot of my colleagues on South Florida’s Task Force 2. We were there 48 hours after the ground shook and did not stop till we left 14 days later. During my tour there my first 80 hours where without much rest. I really had no time to worry about my eyes sorry Dr Roth. My vision was tested and after daily medical assessments, I was still cleared with 20/40 vision with much amazement from our physician. After the fourth day on the island I got to rest for 4 hours I put in my Ortho-K lenses and wore them through our briefing for a total of 5 hours. And went to work for another 36 hours with little breaks lasting about 30 min each. Did that day in and day out till we got back and have worn them every night since. All I can say is that I can’t express in words what I owe Dr Roth for what he has done for me and my family but thank you and he has a personal media here with me. There is a joke in the fire service and it is, there are many ways to spread good or bad news, Television, telephone, telegraph, and tell a fireman. And all I got to say, is if you’re thinking about it just do it you won’t regret anything about it.

Thank you,
Oscar R

not be more thrilled with the results! I don't have to wear contacts
during the day anymore. I can finally exercise and go swimming without
having to worry about my contacts. I can even take a spontaneous nap
during the day without having to worry about ...first removing my contact
lenses. When I recently renewed my driver's license and they asked
whether I need glasses or contact lenses to drive, I could finally say
no! I'm so grateful for finding Dr. Roth and making the decision to try
the therapy. It has changed my life.

Before GMT, I wore glasses at night to watch TV and then contacts during the day. I cannot tell you how many times I would wake up in the morning and my contacts would not want to go in. My eyes always felt dry and scratchy with them in, not to mention the MANY times they would pop out as I w...as playing some sport. I now fight MMA and it is great not to worry about losing a contact during a fight. During practice, someone is always losing a contact and crawling on the mat looking for it It is so wonderful to wake up in the morning, take out my GMT contacts and be able to see perfectly all day and night. Thank you Dr Roth

I like these contacts because I only have to put them in at night so I can see in the morning and then the rest of the day. I don't have to worry about the (contacts) things falling out when I play sports or any thing.

I'd like to thank Dr. David Roth for helping me achieve what I thought could
only be possible with Lasik, which I have always had reservations about and
have long sought an alternative for. I had heard about Ortho-K before and
had shoved it aside since I felt that my near-sightedness was likely too bad
to fix; plus I had never worn contacts. After coming across this procedure
...again in the Herald article, however, I thought there might be something to
it and decided to give it a shot. The fact that since the third day of going
through the process I have had 20/20 vision or near it on most days and have not used my glasses once still feels incredible to say the least; my only
regret now is that I wish I would have done this much sooner. If there would
have been more optometrists like Dr. Roth touting this therapy back when I
first needed to start wearing glasses I'm sure my eyesight wouldn't have
degraded so much since I would've opted for that which would lessen the
progression of my condition. Nonetheless, I am grateful that he is one of
those practicing it and helping it get the publicity it deserves.
