What is Low level light therapy (LLLT)?
Low level light therapy (LLLT) is a non-invasive, painless treatment that uses low-level light energy to stimulate cellular activity and can be used as a treatment for dry eye by stimulating the natural healing mechanisms of the body to reduce inflammation and promote tear production.
Studies have shown that LLLT can increase the production of growth factors, cytokines, and other cellular signaling molecules that are involved in the healing process. This increased production can help to reduce inflammation in the eyes and stimulate the production of natural lubricants, such as tears.
LLLT for dry eye involves the use of a mask device that emits specific wavelengths of light the surface of the skin and the eyes. The light energy penetrates the tissues and stimulates cellular activity in the glands and cells responsible for tear production.
Studies have found that LLLT for dry eye led to improvements in tear production, tear film stability, and overall ocular surface health. LLLT was effective in reducing symptoms of dry eye, such as burning, itching, and dryness.
For the treatment of dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction and ocular rosacea.
- Safe, non-invasive procedure performed in office
- Simply lay back with the mask on and relax as the warm light clears your glands
- 15 minutes per session, may need 3-5 sessions to see maximum results
- No recovery time needed
- No side effects or discomfort
- Safe for adults and children
- LLLT may also help decrease the appearance of facial wrinkles, acne and rosacea
What does LLLT do for my dry eye?
- Heats the meibomian glands and liquefying the meibum/oil inside of the glands.
- Activation of fibroblasts and enhancing the synthesis of new collagen fibers.
- Decreases the bacterial and pathogen load on the eyelids.
- Interferes with the inflammatory cycle by regulation of anti-inflammatory agents and MMPs.
- Reduces the turnover of skin epithelial cells and decreases the risk of physical obstruction of the meibomian glands.
