Why UV Protection for Your Eyes Is Essential This Summer (and All Year Long)

UV rays don’t just damage your skin—they can harm your eyes too. Learn why UV protection is essential and how to protect your vision this summer.

☀️ Your Eyes Need Sun Protection Too

When you think about sun protection, sunscreen is probably the first thing that comes to mind—but what about your eyes?

Just like your skin, your eyes are vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. And in a sunny place like Miami, exposure is happening every single day, not just at the beach.

👁️ What UV Light Does to Your Eyes

Over time, UV exposure can lead to both short-term irritation and long-term damage, including:

  • Photokeratitis (a sunburn of the eye 😳)
  • Dry eye flare-ups
  • Pinguecula & pterygium (those yellow or red growths on the eye)
  • Cataracts
  • Macular degeneration

Even more important: damage is cumulative, meaning it builds up over your lifetime.

🌴 Why Summer Is Especially Risky

During the summer months:

  • UV levels are stronger and more direct
  • People spend more time outdoors
  • Water, sand, and pavement reflect UV rays back into your eyes

So even if you’re sitting under an umbrella, your eyes are still exposed.

🕶️ How to Properly Protect Your Eyes

Not all sunglasses are created equal. Here’s what actually matters:

✔️ 100% UV Protection

Look for lenses labeled UV400—this blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

✔️ Larger Frames = Better Coverage

Oversized or wraparound styles protect from side exposure.

✔️ Polarization (Bonus)

Reduces glare (especially helpful for driving + water), but does NOT replace UV protection.

👩‍⚕️ Don’t Forget Your Kids

Kids are actually at higher risk because their eyes let in more UV light than adults.

If they’re outside → they should be wearing sunglasses or a hat.

💡 Pro Tip from Dr. Ashley Roth

If you’re squinting, your eyes are already under stress.

Wearing proper sunglasses isn’t just about comfort—it’s about protecting your long-term vision.

UV damage is preventable. A simple habit—like wearing sunglasses daily—can make a huge difference in your eye health over time.

If you’re not sure whether your sunglasses truly protect your eyes, we’re happy to check them for you.
